Handwashing

Frequent hand washing prevents the spread of disease

Effective and frequent hand washing prevents the spread of disease.  Wash hands before and after coming into contact with germs (e.g., bacteria), such as using the washroom, blowing your nose, playing, or touching food and/or animals.

Here are the steps to washing your hands correctly:

  1. Wet your hands under warm running water.
  2. Scrub all parts of your hands with plain soap and water for at least 20 seconds (i.e., the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice).  Make sure you create a good lather, and scrub fingertips and under the nails.
  3. Rinse hands under warm running water to remove the lather for 10 seconds.
  4. Use a paper towel to pat dry your hands, to turn off the tap, and to open the bathroom door.
