The volunteer Board of Directors takes great pride in the quality of care and services provided at Normanna. Our priority is to ensure that while being a complex long-term care community with a dementia care unit is a home for its residents.

Our philosophy

We at Normanna follow the Person Centered Care philosophy. Residents are encouraged and supported to build relationships, enjoy companionship, participate in the planning and delivery of their own care, make decisions pertaining to their daily lives, take part in daily activities and meaningfully contribute to their community.

There are 100 publicly subsidized long-term care beds at Normanna Rest Home. 90 rooms are single occupancy and five are double occupancy rooms.

Features

Room features Rooms include a bed, night table, desk and a chair. Residents may also bring an occasional table, favourite chair, TV/radio. There is a hook-up for cablevision in each room. Family members are encouraged to decorate the room in a home-like environment.

Residents and/or the responsible person are accountable for personal equipment such as wheelchair/walker, supplying all toiletries, electric razors, dentures and eyeglasses. Memory box located in front of the room for photos.
Accessibility Normanna is a two-storey residence with elevator access to upper floors, which is wheelchair accessible.
Security Normanna is committed to a culture that values and promotes resident and staff safety. We have monitored sprinkled fire system, monthly fire drills; call bells in bedroom, bathrooms and common areas; keypad entry at exterior doors and to the neighborhood entry doors and video surveillance at exits.

In the event of a power outage, an emergency generator supplies lighting and power outlets for our resident’s safety and security.
Smoking This is a non-smoking care community but a smoking area for residents is located in an outside gazebo in the courtyard. Visitors and staff are not allowed to smoke at Normanna.
Parking and transportation  Family and visitors can park within the perimeters of Normanna and underground parking. Public transit nearby.
Additional site features Burnaby, Deer Lake and Queens Parks, the Burnaby Heritage Museum, City Hall and the Royal City Centre Shopping Mall are nearby.

Programs

Social and recreation programs  Recreation programs are provided six-days-a-week with varying hours of programming to meet the needs of the residents and provide opportunities for choice and flexibility. Seven day recreational services are available in our Special Care Neighborhoods Nordheim.

The Recreation Department at Normanna is committed to providing daily therapeutic recreational programs that promote and facilitate social, emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual growth. These daily activities including, morning exercises and varying active games
painting, coloring, clay work, beauty Group (manicures, foot spa, make-overs, hand/foot spa), table games and much more.

Residents have access to recreation calendars in all neighborhoods and are welcome to partake in activity throughout the building.

Pets Visiting pets shall be welcomed to visit residents providing the visit is conducted in compliance with the Fraser Health Infection Control Manual Standard and Procedure for Pets.

Normanna has a pet therapy program for residents. Guinea pigs and birds onsite, located on the first floor lobby. Staff brings the pets to all units for a visit.

Additional services (additional fees may apply)

Hairdressing  Hair salon available on second floor every Friday with associated fee.
Foot and nail care Foot care nurse available with associated fee.
Additional services The following additional services are available at Normanna for a fee at the discretion of the contractor:

• Mobile professional services, including dental hygienist, dentist, mobile optometrist, foot care and pharmacy services, additional physiotherapy and rehabilitation services
• Music therapy
• Massage therapy
• Ear clinic
