The fluoride varnish program is a free program offered by Fraser Health for children up to 3 years of age who are not under the regular care of a dentist.

Public health dental staff meet with clients and the focus is the prevention of early childhood tooth decay.

A "caries" (cavity) risk assessment is done which will help determine if the child is at risk for tooth decay and whether or not they require fluoride varnish. Together with dental health counselling, fluoride varnish can help in the prevention of tooth decay for children. Appropriate dental health information is also provided to the parents to promote healthy dental behaviours.

Dental staff also help families access dental care by providing them with information on dental treatment resources that are available.
