The Psychiatric High Acuity Unit is a regional resource for Fraser Health.

This resource is available to Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH), Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH), and Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) and ranges from a 4 to 12-bed unit in a secure area for the purpose of short-term treatment assessment of patients with acute mental health and substance use care needs.

This short-term program provides specialized treatment for patients to continue with their recovery journey. It is intended to stabilize patients who will return to their referring unit for continued treatment. The expected length of stay is 7-14 days.

Patient areas may include an exercise room, comfort room, group therapy room, dining area and quiet lounge. Patients may have an individual or a shared room depending on the location and availability or needs. Each site offers a slightly different setting, and all sites aim to provide spaces and resources tailored to providing therapeutic care.

There is increased security and safety for patients and staff entering and exiting the unit. Some sites have a visitor lounge located off the secure area before entering the unit. It has a TV, seating area and secure space for storing visitor belongings.
