Volunteers are important members of the health care team. They offer service and support to our patients, families and visitors, while enhancing patient care and the overall experience at Langley Memorial Hospital and long term care.
Opportunities (19+)
- B.C. Pets and Friends / St. John Ambulance Pet Therapy: Visit with patients, families, visitors and staff who need a little pet connection in long-term care and acute care. We are looking for volunteers who are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
- Auxiliary Gift Shop: Support the Auxiliary to Langley Regional Hospital with customer service, cashier duties and organization of stock items. We are specifically looking for casual float positions.
- Musical volunteers: Entertain residents in Long-term care and in the hospital. Must audition and play one of the following instruments; violin, piano, guitar, harp.
- ER host: Work in the Emergency Room supporting staff and patients. Must be unflappable in a crisis. Ideal for those interested in going into the medical field.

Welcome desk volunteers: Volunteers assist patients and site guest to navigate their way throughout the Langley Memorial Hospital campus. Volunteers in this role must be very comfortable with approaching people to ask if they need assistance. Exceptional customer service and communication skills are required for this role.

Long-term care social visits: Visit with residents in long-term care and Patient Assessment and Transition Home (PATH). Visits are to be conducted between the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Requirements
Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be a successful candidate:
- A current criminal record check and references
- Minimum age: 19 years (excludes VolunTEEN Program)
- Minimum commitment of six months
- Proficient in English (verbal and written)

Please take the time to consider if volunteering with us is the right decision for you. A minimum of six months commitments and 75 hours are required prior to qualifying for a reference. The onboarding process takes between two to six weeks depending on when you apply. Please note there is a mandatory in person weekday orientation scheduled monthly that you must attend before starting your volunteer role.
Applications must be received online and online learning modules are required. If you are not computer proficient please ask a friend or family to help you navigate the online learning system. These requirements support excellent care and provide you with a good foundation for volunteering in health care. We appreciate you taking the time to consider if this is the right choice for you.
Opportunities (16-19)
Summer Youth Program: Closed until June 1, 2025
This highly competitive eight-week program is for youth to work with recreation staff in long-term care and assigned duties in acute care. Each summer youth volunteer will complete one mandatory shift at Penny Pinchers thrift store in Downtown Langley. Interviews will take place at a future date Applications must be submitted under the youth application.
The Summer Youth portal will open June 1 - June 14. Closing time for accepting applications will be 5 p.m. on June 14.
Requirements
Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be a successful candidate:
- Age: 16 - 18 years. Parent/Legal guardian consent is required under the age of 18.
- Minimum commitment: July 2 - August 30, 2025. Weekly attendance for two-hour shifts: 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- Mandatory orientation for successful candidates: TBD from 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
- Mandatory four-hour summer coverage shift at the Penny Pinchers Thrift store.
What will you receive at the end of the Summer Youth Program:
- After completing a minimum of 20 hours you will qualify for a standard reference letter from the program.
- Direct admission (if desired) into the VolunTEEN program if you live in Langley or attend a Langley Secondary school without having to interview.
- Hospital experience can help you decide if a medical career is right for you.
- A sense of pride in helping your community.
Application process
- Submit applications prior to June 14, 5 p.m. Please note only those with listed availability will be considered for interviews. If you have not listed your summer availability please ensure you do so on your application prior to June 14.
- Invitations will be sent out June 14 for interviews to accepted applicants.
- If you receive an invitation for an interview it will take place between June 16 and June 19 between the timeframe of 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Please note this will be the only times offered for interviews for this program and spaces will book up quickly.
- The results of the interviews will be shared June 20, 2025 by 4 p.m.
- Screening will be done- Criminal Record Check and two written reference letters will be required at this point.
- The orientation will take place TBD from 4 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. This is mandatory and you cannot participate in the program if you are unable to attend.
- Summer Youth will begin on the Week of July 2 and run until August 31.
- You will sign up for your mandatory Penny Pincher shift at the orientation.
VolunTEEN Opportunities – 16 to 18 years
Requirements
Volunteers must meet the following requirements to be a successful candidate:
VolunTEEN position (Regular):
- All VolunTEENS must reside or attend school in Langley
- Age: 16 - 18 years. Parent/Legal guardian consent required under age 18
- Minimum commitment: October 4, 2024 - June 30, 2025, weekly two hour shifts, Tuesday to Friday (4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.) or Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 12 p.m. or 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
- Three mandatory three hour shifts at Penny Pinchers – could be scheduled on Pro D Days, Saturdays throughout the year, Winter break, Spring Break or Summer of 2025
- Must commit to completing a minimum of 70 VolunTEEN hours in hospital , hospital orientation and the 4 mandatory PP shifts that are required for program to qualify for a reference.
- Mandatory attendance of in person hospital Orientation Oct 4, 4:00 - 7:30 p.m.
VolunTEEN Team Lead (Leadership position):
- Returning VolunTEEN student
- Must have completed a minimum of 70 hours in the 2024 program
- Must demonstrate leadership, maturity and commitment to their role • Must commit to 85 Hours for 2024 - 2025 program (they work a 2.5 hours shift)
- Three mandatory three hour shifts at Penny Pinchers – could be scheduled on Pro D Days, Saturdays throughout the year, Winter break, Spring Break or Summer of 2025
- Age: 16 - 18 years. Parent/Legal guardian consent required under age 18
- Mandatory Team Lead Orientation: October 3, 2024, 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Team lead interviews dates: September 19 and 20. You will receive a selection email by September 23.

- Step 1 Application: If selected for an interview you will be contacted by September 17.
- Step 2 Interview (September 23 - 27, 2024): you will be contacted by Oct 1, 2024 regarding the status of your application in the VolunTEEN program.
- Step 3 Screening: Criminal record check and two references will be required.
- Step 4 Orientation (October 4, 2023 - 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.): Mandatory completion of new volunteer orientation curriculum and group orientation session.
