PACU Nurse Carol Duncan

Nurses like Carol Duncan embrace the changing landscape of healthcare and the opportunity for continuous learning.

Carol Duncan is a seasoned nurse at Eagle Ridge Hospital who is devoted to serving her patients with quality care. She embraces the changing landscape of health care and the opportunity for continuous learning. “I had an opportunity to take a position at Royal Columbian Hospital, but when I heard that Eagle Ridge Hospital would be implementing MEDITECH Expanse, I decided to stay at Eagle Ridge,” says Carol. “I’ve been around for a long time, but I still want to be stimulated in my work, so I was interested in the challenge of learning a new system.”

That passion for, and dedication to, learning was accelerated today when the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Carol’s unit, launched medical device integration — connecting the physiological monitors to MEDITECH Expanse, enabling a patient’s vitals to flow from the monitor directly into the patient’s electronic chart. This digital integration means that health care teams no longer have to document vitals manually, eliminating the risk of transcription error and resulting in more time spent with patients.

When asked what advice Carol would offer those who are apprehensive or anxious about a digital transformation, she suggests, “Embrace the opportunity to learn, maintain realistic expectations, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, commit to learning something new every day, and know that down the road it will get easier, and the outcomes will be worthwhile.”
