Why sexual health education is important in schools. Why it is important to foster an inclusive environment in schools and how the Healthy Schools Program can support educators.
Why is sexual health education important in schools?
Schools are a valuable source of sexual health information and educators are well-positioned to play a key role in the sexual health education of students.
The Canadian guidelines for sexual health education highlights what should be included in a comprehensive sexual health education. This education can help youth develop the skills and knowledge to make healthy, informed decisions and enhance their sexual health and wellbeing. Comprehensive sexual health does not lead to earlier or more frequent sexual activity.
Why is it important to foster an inclusive school environment?
Creating inclusive spaces protects children and youth from experiencing distress, discrimination and bullying. Sexual health education provided to youth in schools should be inclusive of all students, with education specific to their unique needs.
How to create inclusive environments in schools
Treating each other with dignity and respect, regardless of differences, leads to an understanding about the diverse society in which we live. Here are some tips on how to build a respectful school culture in the classroom.
How can the Healthy Schools program support educators?
The Fraser Health Healthy Schools program aims to create vibrant, connected and healthier schools through collective action with our partners in education. Public Health nurses, dedicated to the program, work in partnership with school districts and identified schools to promote physical, emotional and social well-being using a comprehensive school health approach. The Healthy Schools Program focuses on the following areas of wellness: sexual health, mental wellness and social inclusion, active living, healthy eating and food security and substance use health and prevention.
