Important steps for good respiratory hygiene during influenza and COVID-19 season
Understanding respiratory hygiene
Respiratory hygiene is important to prevent the spread of germs, particularly the ones carried in droplets when we talk, cough or sneeze. These droplets can contain infectious agents, meaning it’s important to minimize their spread.
Key respiratory etiquette practices
- Wear a mask: Wearing a mask in indoor public spaces helps reduce the spread of respiratory viruses, protecting both yourself and others.
- Cover coughs and sneezes: Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly and wash your hands immediately afterward.
- Practice hand hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public spaces or after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. If soap and water aren't available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your face: Touching your eyes, nose or mouth can transfer germs from surfaces to your body. Keeping your hands away from your face is a simple but effective way to reduce this risk.
- Stay home when sick: If you're feeling unwell, stay home to avoid spreading illness to others.
Creating a healthier environment
- Regular cleaning: Disinfect frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices to reduce the risk of contamination.
- Improve ventilation: Good airflow can help disperse airborne germs. When possible, open windows or use air filtration systems to improve ventilation.
