Jerome's journey from construction worker to medical device reprocessing technician highlights self-discovery, resilience and the pursuit of new, fulfilling paths.
Jerome is a proud young Indigenous man with deep family roots connecting to the Boothroyd Indian Band and Chawathil First Nation. His journey to his current role as a medical device reprocessing technician (MDRT) is one of self-discovery, courage and pride of honouring who he is and where he comes from.
With support from the Fraser Health Indigenous Recruitment and Retention team and the Stó:lō Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (SASET) program, Jerome created a path in health care that transformed his life.
Jerome’s story began in construction, “It’s what my family did; it’s what I felt like I had to do,” he says.
Despite his family’s background in construction, it wasn’t the career he wanted. After sustaining a few injuries, Jerome decided to find something more meaningful to him.
“My auntie always supported me; she’s the one who found the MDRT program through SASET,” Jerome shares about his family’s encouragement to find a new path.
The Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) program is a fast-paced, intensive course that provides trainees with the skills to clean, sterilize and maintain medical equipment for medical procedures.
Despite the challenges, Jerome found the experience rewarding. “The best part for me was finding a new path in life. I was making a good salary but feeling stuck, dealing with a number of mental health issues. This program opened a new chapter for me,” he says.
Now a certified MDRT, Jerome enjoys the fast-paced nature of his job. “I thrive on rhythm,” he says, enjoying the constant activity. His work allows him to support patients without providing direct care. “I like helping people from behind the scenes,” Jerome shares.
Jerome’s advice to others is simple: “Don’t be afraid to change. If you want to try something new, take the leap. You don’t have to follow your family’s path—just be who you are.”
