Construction Notice

Road work to begin at Brunette Avenue and Sherbrooke Street

What's happening?

  • We will be widening the intersection of Brunette Avenue and Sherbrooke Street to allow large trucks to use this route for hospital deliveries. (See map below.)
  • Construction will start on April 7 and last until early September 2025.
  • Construction hours are the regular hours permitted by the City of New Westminster. Permitted work hours on Brunette Avenue are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
  • Traffic control personnel and signage will direct vehicles and pedestrians around the work.
  • This work supports the City of New Westminster’s plans to turn East Columbia Street into a ‘Great Street’ with wider sidewalks, narrower intersections, and restrictions on large trucks.
  • Once this work is complete, and the City of New Westminster has confirmed the restriction of large trucks on East Columbia Street, large hospital delivery trucks will be able to access the hospital via Brunette Avenue rather than East Columbia Street. The date to open the new route is still to be determined.

Impacts to you:

  • All drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to avoid this intersection.
  • Obey all traffic control personnel for your own safety.

Drivers

  • Vehicle traffic must use East Columbia Street for access to Sherbrooke Street.
  • Exit from Sherbrooke Street onto East Columbia Street, not Brunette Avenue.
  • Parking along Sherbrooke Street between Wilson Street and Brunette Avenue will be impacted throughout the project.
  • Traffic control personnel will guide vehicles at driveways along Sherbrooke Street, vehicles turning from Rousseau Street onto Brunette Avenue, as well as vehicles turning to and from East Columbia Street.

Pedestrians

  • The sidewalks on Sherbrooke Street near the work area will be closed.
  • There will be a temporary pedestrian ramp on Brunette Avenue.

Cyclists

  • Avoid the area and use the East Columbia Street bike lanes instead.
