What are sharps?

Sharps are medical devices with sharp points or edges that can puncture or cut the skin. 

Examples include needles, syringes and lancets.

Sharps are used by a diverse range of community members including people with diabetes and other medical conditions, pet owners and people who use illicit substances. 

The safe disposal of used sharps supports public health and safety.

Where can I dispose of sharps in my community?

Sharps may be dropped off at community pharmacies, public health units, harm reduction sites and Sharps Disposal Units across the region.

What should I do if I am poked by a needle?

1. Wash the affected area with soap and water. Do not squeeze.
2. Seek medical attention immediately.
3. Remember the risk of infection is very low. There are no reports of HIV infection following a needle stick injury in the community.

How is Fraser Health supporting safe sharps disposal in my community?

Fraser Health is currently implementing a Regional Community Sharps Management Strategy in partnership with municipalities, community pharmacies and harm reduction service providers.

The strategy aims to expand safe disposal options across the region and reduce inappropriately discarded sharps.
